In July 1969 the US astronauts were landing on the moon and I, as a young
airman stationed in the Philippines, had an opportunity to fly to Hong Kong
on a military hop in an old creaky C-54. In those days before the internet
Hong Kong was the cheapest place to buy camera gear. I had my Automat MX
then but I was largely shooting Kodachrome in a Nikon F. I was mainly
loading up with Nikon lenses in HK but Rollei had just come out with a 35mm
projector, the P-35A, and I picked one up. It has served me well for more
than 40 years. It came with a Rollei-Projar 2.8/85 lens.

I just received this Rollei-S-Projar 2.5/90 lens I won in an auction on
Ebay. It is still too light in the house to set up my projector but I am
excited to see if it is significantly better than the original 2.8/85 lens.
It certainly appears to be better made. The two lenses are very close in
external dimensions but the 90mm lens is made of machined aluminum while the
85mm lens is entirely plastic. The 90mm weighs about 190 grams and the 85mm
about 70 grams. I can't tell if there is a difference in the number of
elements. There are two different store price stickers on the box. One says
"PELEX CAMERA" and has a list price of $109.00 and then a handwritten
markdown to $60.00. The other sticker has no store name but a list price of
100.57 and "your price" of 75.43.

I paid $49.00 plus shipping. Does anyone have experience with or knowledge
of this lens?

Congratulations for your projection lens, it is one of the
Rollei standard lenses for 4x4 and 24x36mm slide projectors with
42,5mm tube, it was made by ISCO in Göttingen, Germany. Isco is a well
known optics manufacturer, they made camera lenses, industrial lenses
and projection lenses from 1936, they were and they are projection
lenses specialists, they still make cinema projection lenses, the
company belongs to Schneider Kreuznach, Isco became Schneider
Kreuznach Isco Division GmbH and it changed the name again last year,
it is ISK Optics GmbH now. All projection lenses for Rollei projectors
are very good in general, anyway the HFT and MC Heidosmat lenses made
by Rollei and ISCO, Rollei Apogon HFT made by Rollei and AV Rollei
Xenotars HFT made by Schneider are the bests ones. The Rollei Report
IV mentions several projection lenses, however it only shows the AV
Rollei Apogon 2.8/120mm lens diagram for 6x6 projectors with 74mm
tube.
Enjoy your projector with the new lens!

Carlos

ISCO = Ioseph Schneider Company. They also made
the famed "cunt cameras" which pop up from time
to time at US camera shows -- gynacological
cameras with a penis-shaped insert over the lens. Very Funny Not!

Finally it's dark enough here at 48 degrees Northern latitude and I
projected some slides. There are subtle but significant improvements in the
projected image. Hair strands sparkle, skin pores become visible. Also,
scratches and dust on my old slides are more prominent L

I have the Heidosmat, S-Projar, Heidosmat-S and AV-Xenotar for the
Rollei projectors. The 85mm f2.8 Heidosmat is the worst. Lack of
details and soft in the corner. The three other 90mm f2.5 are in a
different league. Much more contrastier, more details and sharper in
the corner. The difference between these three are small.

I have a Leitz Colorplan as well and it is also very good. But it
doesn't fit in my Rollei P360 so I can't A/B it with Rollei or the
Schneider. The Leitz came with a Pradovit C2500, and that's a hell of
projector!

The holy grail seems to be the Zeiss P-Sonnar but I have never tried it :(
